3 Shifts You Need to Make to Go From Solopreneur to CEO

Remember the early days of your business? You were wearing all the hats, being your own content creator, accountant, business coach, marketing manager, and probably a handful of other things. We all start in that “scrappy solopreneur” phase, but now that you’ve been in business a while (and want to keep growing), you can’t stay in that phase.

While that hustle works when you’re just getting off the ground, there absolutely comes a point where real, sustainable growth needs something different from you.

The journey from being the solopreneur who does everything, to becoming the CEO who leads (and delegates) is one of the most challenging shifts you’ll make in your business. But the work of reimagining your role from solopreneur to CEO is something that’s well worth the effort!

Real Quick Though: It’s More Than a To-Do List

When you start transitioning into the role of a CEO, you’re going to be tempted to narrow it all down to a to-do list.

“Hire someone to do (fill in the blank).”

“Make sure I’m on top of my taxes so I can better plan financially for the growth of my business.”

“Get better at answering emails that make me want to run and hide.” *wink wink*

And while all of those are very much skills that CEOs should have, what’s more important is how you are thinking about your role. Because your mindset will determine everything else in your business.

You have to start thinking like a CEO. The way CEOs look at making decisions is a lot different than someone who’s running a one-woman show. They start thinking about how their choices will impact the overall business, who they’ve hired, and the longevity of what they’ve built.

If you don’t start seeing yourself as the CEO you are, no amount of to-do lists is going to take your business where you want it to go. So we need to get into what it means to make a mindset shift as a CEO.

Mindset Shift #1: Start Seeing Yourself as a Visionary, Not Just an Executor

Yes, CEOs often DO high-level tasks, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking that thinking isn’t working. It very much is. As CEO, your main gig switches from doing the work to directing where the work goes.

This means getting crystal clear on your business’s North Star – figuring out not just what you do, but the why and the destination. You’ve gotta start making strategic plays, measuring opportunities against that big vision, not just quick wins.

When you’re used to ticking off tasks like mad, spending an afternoon just thinking about strategy can feel…well, kind of lazy or a waste of time, right? That’s that “productivity guilt” creeping in. But your real value as CEO comes from maximizing the entire team’s output, not just your own.

Try reframing strategy time as high-value work and schedule it in. And start tracking CEO-level wins, like strategic moves, instead of zeroing in on the tasks you’ve completed.

Mindset Shift #2: Control Less, Trust More

Don’t hate me for this one. I KNOW it’s hard. The truth is that while we as business owners want to make sure every final detail is perfect, it just won’t be. Mistakes will be made. Contractors will slip up. Someone will inevitably forget a deadline.

But if every little thing needs your stamp of approval, or you keep doing it all yourself, you’ve created a bottleneck. Which means you also cap your business’s output to just your capacity.

Building that trust with your team is a process – it means hiring the right people, training them thoroughly, and giving constructive feedback instead of just swooping in and taking over. So if you’re still uncomfortable, start small. Delegating lower-risk stuff before handing off the critical projects. Just remember that CEOs who delegate effectively grow way faster.

Mindset Shift #3: Stop Chasing the “Task Completion High”

Crossing things off your to-do list feels good. And it’s a good thing to do. But continually chasing that high is going to keep you stuck in said bottleneck. As a CEO, you need to start organizing your time around what’s important, around the high-leverage stuff, not just what feels urgent.

High-leverage activities are the ones that have compound effects – they improve systems, empower your team, or create new opportunities. Think developing strategy, building partnerships, ideating new offers, or ways to improve your memberships.

And compound effects aren’t seen immediately. It’s like a stone block you’re carving into a sculpture, you have to chip away one piece at a time. Eventually, you’ll look back and have something that gives you a (longer-term) sense of accomplishment!

One Final Tip? Expect Growing Pains

The shift from solopreneur to CEO is not always a smooth one. Expect growing pains. Revenue may fluctuate as you invest in your team before they’re fully humming along. You might have a bit of an identity crisis as your role changes.

It’s normal, but you have to keep going. Pushing past these hurdles gets you to a place that far exceeds what a solopreneur can manage alone.

You Got This, Seriously!

As you lean into your CEO role, celebrate every single step forward. Every successful delegation, every strategic win, every boundary you maintain, it’s all working up to build the business YOU want.
